O History, Etymology, & Pronunciation

Vowels are sounds that are pronounced without any restriction in the vocal tract. The fifteenth letter of the English alphabet is ‘O’. From earlier lo, from Latin illum (the initial l having disappeared; compare Spanish lo, Italian lo). In more recent borrowings, it represents the original sound of the word, i.e. o or oː (e.g., opera oːpeɾa). In native Latvian words (and in some older borrowings), o represents the sound of IPA uə̯ (e.g., otrs uə̯tɾs). The letter Õ in Portuguese is nasalized, meaning the sound passes through both the mouth and nose.

Accented O has a unique sound, and its usage varies depending on the language and context. The long o, now a diphthong, descended from Middle English long o, an open sound, which was derived from Old English long a. The khelaghor long o has become a diphthong (ou), as in the words bone and rose. A form with a dot in the centre occurs in Thera, and this is paralleled in the large Etruscan form.

  • The use of this Phoenician letter for a vowel sound is due to the early Greek alphabets, which adopted the letter “omicron” to represent the vowel /o/.
  • Practice listening to native speakers, repeat words with the O sound, and use pronunciation guides.
  • In other contexts, especially before a letter with a minim, ⟨o⟩ may represent the sound /ʌ/, as in ‘son’ or ‘love’.
  • In Greek, a variation of the form later came to differentiate this long sound (omega, meaning “large O”) from the short o (Omicron, meaning “small o”).

In Corinth and in the inscriptions from Abu Simbel in Egypt there is a form with an offset dot. The Greek omicron gave rise to the corresponding Cyrillic letter O. The name of the Phoenician letter was ʿeyn, meaning “eye”, and its shape originates simply as a drawing of a human eye (possibly inspired by the corresponding Egyptian hieroglyph, cf. Proto-Sinaitic script). Its graphic form has remained fairly constant from Phoenician times until today.

Perhaps originally the interjection O, appended to words as in -o def. It is also the fourth vowel in the English language. From Middle English oo, an apocopic form of oon. In formal Welsh, the equivalent pronoun is ef. O is used predominantly in the north of Wales, while e is used in the south, with fo and fe as variants of o and e respectively after a vowel. Aphetic form of efô, reinforced form of ef

The short sound is the descendant of Middle English short o in which both the closed and open short o, which were distinguished in Old English, met. In words such as word, work, and world, the sound has been affected by the preceding bilabial. Before the consonant r, the sound is rounded and pronounced very far back in the mouth—e.g., glory and north. The minuscule form retains the shape of the majuscule letter. At Miletus a rounded form similar to an upside-down U occurs. The form of the letter on the Moabite Stone was small o, and this small form appears in early Greek inscriptions from Thera and Corinth.
